Stuart Varney, Fox Business: Joining us now is the author of "Blood Profits, How American Consumers Unwittingly Fund Terrorists". Vanessa Neumann is with us, she is the president of the political consulting firm Asymmetrica. Vanessa welcome to the program.
Vanessa Neumann: Thank you, thank you for having me on.
Stuart Varney: Looks to us, sitting here in New York like they [Venezuela] are in the verge of civil war. Are they?
Vanessa Neumann: Well, they could be. There are people in Washington advocating for weapons to be sent to the opposition —I think that's a mistake because then you really will have civil war...
Stuart Varney: [interrupts] Who wants in America that we should send weapons to the opposition?
Vanessa Neumann: There are some very right wing people, lobbyists who want...
Stuart Varney: [interrupts] Nobody in the Administration at this point?
Vanessa Neumann: Ah, the Administration is taking advice on it. I'm speaking out that that should not be done because once the opposition has weapons the government really will kill them.
Stuart Varney: Then what can we do? I mean there is a mess...
Vanessa Neumann: (interrupts) Stop doing business. Stop doing business with the regime. They are about to crack up, I give this regime 60 to 90 days, they are out. The military has already issued a letter to the OAS [Organization of American States] saying that they will back the current National Assembly, that they will abide by the Constitution, which means the current people. The referendum yesterday [16 July 2017 Venezuelan popular consultation] means that they are losing —Maduro is heading to an abyss— with this July 30th [ ]vote that is going to make Venezuela into Cuba. Venezuelans don't want it.
Stuart Varney: But he's not going to go down without a fight.
Vanessa Neumann: Nope, their going to...
Stuart Varney: [interrupts] He's going to arm his brigands...
Vanessa Neumann: [interrupts] Oh, yeah.
Stuart Varney: ...or his bands of people in the streets...
Vanessa Neumann: [interrupts] Yeah.
Stuart Varney: ...and that will be civil war...
Vanessa Neumann: [interrupts] Yeah.
Stuart Varney: ...at which point you gonna have demands to arm the opposition as well?
Vanessa Neumann: Yes, but the military is not backing him, the military is not engaging in the violence and the military will —they are starting to negotiate, already and after yesterday's vote they are negotiating even more— they will put him on a plane the way we did with the last military dictator in 1958.
Stuart Varney: You think its all over by October?
Vanessa Neumann: I think so, I don't see how this can survive much more. You have the July 30th Constituent Assembly where he is going to send his thugs into the National Assembly to remove them by force and put —and then you have a clash, we will have a bloody August— and by then we will be done.
Stuart Varney: And what takes the place of Maduro and his socialists?
Vanessa Neumann: Okay, so we need a transitional government, which means unfortunately we're going to have to keep some of the Chavista commanders, particularly some of the military —which is one of the reasons why they should make deals now— that's not stay too long. Um, and then have a transitional government that's sort of a mix of all the different parties. Ah, you know with defence secretary, interior minister, vice president, have a —and then call elections within 30 days.
Stuart Varney: Ah, you probably can't say this or agree with it but what about the CIA having a quiet word...
Vanessa Neumann: [laughs]
Stuart Varney: ...with some of the generals and say "here's a plane ticket to America, just don't shoot your own people."
Vanessa Neumann: Well I'm, ah, I'm sure there are people trying to do that. I am sure there are people in the U.S. government —I know for a fact Putin has even come out against Maduro. he had a private...
Stuart Varney: [interrupts] He has?
Vanessa Neumann: Yes, he had a private phone call because the Russians have already calculated that this is done and that they wanna, they have billions of dollars in interests, and they wanna —so do the Chinese, the Chinese have also backed away. A lot of companies, that they do not want to see their investments blown up, they, ah, they are starting to back away and plan for what comes next.
Stuart Varney: Its done, but the end will be nasty.
Vanessa Neumann: The end will be very nasty, but hopefully we will have new elections before the end of the year.
Stuart Varney: Okay, Vanessa Neumann, thanks for joining us, we appreciate it.
Vanessa Neumann: Thank you.
Stuart Varney: You come back and tell us what is going on too.
